In more advanced stages of the disease, patients undergo scaling and root planning - a deep periodontal cleaning process. Scaling involves the removal of plaque, tartar, and toxins from above and below the gum line; planning is the process of smoothing rough spots on root surfaces. One quadrant of the mouth is treated at a time in order to help pockets in the gum tissue shrink and heal. This may be followed by mouth rinses and other special medications. Our dentists may recommend the patient use an electric toothbrush for proper cleaning and infection prevention.
In rarer cases where the infected pockets do not heal after treatment, the patient may undergo periodontal surgery to reduce the depth of the gum pockets; we may also refer you to specialized care by a periodontist.
