Dentures (and Partial Dentures)

When it comes to replacing missing teeth, complete or partial dentures can be a beautiful and functional way to restore your smile. Made to resemble your natural teeth, a denture is a removable dental appliance made to replace some or all of your missing teeth (as well as surrounding tissue).

Partial Dentures

When only some teeth are missing, partial dentures can fill in the spaces and prevent remaining teeth from shifting.

Comlete Dentures

Complete dentures are used in cases where all of a patient's teeth are missing. There are two options when it comes to complete dentures: "conventional" or "immediate". A conventional denture is created only after a patient's remaining teeth have been removed and gum tissue has healed (typically 4-6 weeks after the initial procedure). The patient must go without teeth for this period of time. Immediate dentures, meanwhile, are made prior to the patient's procedure and placed immediately after tooth removal. The patient, therefore, will not be left without teeth during healing and may simply need some adjustment after tissues heal and shrink.

The Denture Process

The denture process typically takes several office visits over the course of a few weeks. We begin with taking measurements and taking a highly accurate mold, thereby creating a custom denture. This may be followed by appointments for "try-ins", where the patient tests the denture for color, shape, and fit.
Until your tissues and muscles become accustomed to the new denture appliance, you may experience some soreness, difficulty speaking and chewing, and increased saliva flow. This is normal and disappears with time. Good oral hygiene, proper cleaning of the dentures, and routine dental checkups and cleanings are encouraged to prolong the life of your new dentures. Due to normal wear, dentures may have to be replaced or repaired after some time; they are, however, extremely durable and long-lasting.
