What are dental implants exactly, and how do they work?
Usually made of titanium, implants are artificial teeth and roots that are placed into the jaw bone (upper or lower). This may be done by a dentist or periodontist (gum specialist). The resulting structure is extremely strong, durable, and long-lasting. While implants may have to be replaced or re-tightened periodically with normal wear, they tend to last for years.

What is the dental implant process like?
The dental implant process takes some time and care, with several visits over a period of a few months. The result, however, is truly long-lasting and worthwhile.
Before the implant is placed into the bone, we take x-rays and molds (or impressions) of your teeth and jaw; this helps us assess the gum tissue, bone, and space. Following this process, the area is numbed and the implant surgically put onto the bone; it will then take up to six months for the dental implant to heal and integrate itself. With certain types of dental implants, another surgery may be needed to put in a "post" - that which holds the artificial structure in place. In other cases, the anchor and post are attached along with the implant in one step.
Artificial teeth are created and fitted to the post after a few weeks. This step may take one or two months, as several fittings may be necessary. Once the area is allowed to heal, the artificial teeth are secured to the implant. The result is a comfortable, stable structure.
When treatment is finished, patients receive instructions for care of their dental implants.
