Composite Fillings
When a tooth suffers a crack, fracture, or decay, a composite - or tooth-colored - filling can serve to repair it. The composite literally fills the tooth once the affected portion is removed. Composite fillings are best for front teeth, as they are tooth-colored and blend in best in these visible areas. They are not permanent; however, they're extremely durable and will last for years. The main reasons for composite fillings are:
- Repairing cracked, chipped, or broken teeth
- Treating and protecting worn or decayed teeth
- Closing a space between teeth
It usually takes just one appointment to place a composite filling. After numbing the tooth, we remove any decay, clean the space, and prepare the area. A special kind of medication is administered if decay is near the tooth's nerve. The composite filling is then placed; it is shaped and polished in order to restore the tooth's natural shape and function.
Keep in mind that after a composite filling is first placed, there may be sensitivity to hot and cold; this is normal and will taper once the tooth is acclimated to the new filling. We provide care instructions following your treatment; as always, good eating and hygiene practices along with regular visits to the dentist will prolong the life of the new filling.
