Amalgam Fillings
Among the many different types of fillings available, silver amalgam fillings are one of the most widely used today. Used to repair fractured, cracked, or decayed areas, amalgam fillings are most commonly used on back teeth (unlike composite fillings, the color is more prominent). While silver amalgam fillings may eventually need replacement, they are extremely durable and offer a long-lasting solution for a beautiful smile.
When are amalgam fillings used? - In the event of broken or cracked teeth - To repair decayed teeth - Treating and restoring worn teeth
It usually takes just one appointment to have an amalgam filling placed. After numbing the tooth, the affected area is cleared of decay and thoroughly cleaned out. (Protective medication is administered when decay is near a tooth's nerve.) The silver filling is then placed into the tooth, as well as shaped and polished for a comfortable bit and natural shape. Note that as the tooth acclimates to this new filling, it is normal to experience some sensitivity to hot and cold; this is only temporary.
As with any any dental procedure, you will be provided with post-care instructions and recommendations for hygiene and diet.
